Why The RED nose clown??
Actually, there are various stories as to why red nose.
At the closing ceremonies for Torino Winter
Olympics, the athletes were all given a red nose to wear according to a tradition that the clown nose came from an athlete who had
fallen. It was an interesting touch of humility in comedy for such an
occasion.
The earliest written account of a clown with a red nose,
that was added on, was a guy named Pickled Herring. It was held in place with a string. He is
also an early account of big shoes. He operated in what we would call Germany
today.
Before the tie on
nose there were people that painted noses on. There were people that did
inebriate acts.
So Why red? Red was what many used for makeup
noses. So it was a logical step for the first tie on noses to be red. There were
also some black noses back then. Somewhere along the line it became a tradition
and has been passed down to us.

Big shoes?
People got the idea of a clown from drunk people, hobos, and homepless people.
The reason behind most of a clowns costume is because it was based on the idea of a drunk man.
The reason for both the red nose and the big shoes is both because the clown was supposed to be drunk. The big shoes were made so that a clown can walk around like a drunk person and not fall over.
Drunks walk in that shambling way, and are tipsy and have difficulty
staying on their feet.

Why so much makeup?
The reason behind the make-up is to helps to show a clowns personality and individuality.
For example if has a brightly coloured face the clown will most likely have a happy, bright and mischievous personality, the brightly coloured face helps to convey the clowns individual personality and stand out from the rest of the clowns and define each clown by matching the clowns style with the right kind and style of makeup.
The second reason using clowning makeup is effective is of course to make the audience laugh by over enhancing facial features.

Different costumes for different clowns
For example: A jester would wear a three branched hat that made the symbol for a donkey to get people to laugh. This was worn to make people laugh and for that only reason saying that they were stupid. The Jester's costume was called a "Motley," receiving its name from the dyed multicolored wool from which it was made. The costumes differed with the imagination of each Jester, but essential ingredients were often part of the clothing. Triangular hemlines were seen with arrays of bells hung all around. Headgear became popular in the shape of a conical cap featuring donkey's ears, a cock's comb, or woven triangles with bells.
Most of the clowns today just wear bright colors to show the mood they are in or bring out one's feelings.
Most of the hats made in the 14th century were early prototypes for the hats made today for clowns.
